Thefts of bathers' personal belongings from beaches, mainly from Finikoudes, have assumed great proportions in Larnaka, with the emergency measures of the Police, which recruited police officers under cover, leading, with the help of citizens, to 20 arrests in the last two and a half months. Among them were several minors, one of whom was arrested twice in the same week for the same offence.
The last two arrests took place at noon on Wednesday in Finikoudes and concern two minor foreigners, 15 and 16 years old, permanent residents of Cyprus, who allegedly stole a bag that was on a beach bed. The minors were found by a citizen, who immediately informed the police and handed over the stolen bag to officers. The two minors were questioned and charged in writing, in the presence of guardians and lawyers and are expected to be summoned before a court.
The repeated thefts from beaches, as well as cases of delinquency in Finikoudes, brought emergency measures by the Police in Larnaka a few weeks ago, while last Monday the institution of cycling policing was reinstated. It is noted that the Cycling Police patrol the coastal front of Larnaka from Finikoudes to Mackenzie, as well as the commercial center of the city.
As Larnaka Police spokesperson Spyros Chrysostomou told "F", the measures taken had positive results. "Especially in the afternoon hours, police officers in civilian clothes are placed on beaches, since there is a phenomenon of some perpetrators stealing when lifeguards leave and people should be aware of this," he noted.
In addition, according to Mr. Chrysostomou, static patrols were placed at the end of Finikoudes in the evening hours, due to the fact that many fights between foreigners were observed. "Every night there are about 10 police officers in the area, who carry out checks on cars and premises. That way we were able to have a reduction in those incidents at that point."
