CLIMATE CHANGE WILL BE 'PAID' BY VULNERABLE HOUSEHOLDS IN CYPRUS

 Cyprus Mail 28 August 2024

The Cyprus Institute has recently published a new paper in its Policy Briefs series, entitled "Tackling Climate Change is a Good Economic and Social Policy".

In it, Professor Theodoros Zachariadis of the Institute informs about the recent findings of scientific studies regarding the economic impact of climate change. He underlines that the latest studies on the one hand result in much more negative predictions of climate change in the economy than the previous analyses, and on the other hand estimate that Cyprus will be one of the European countries with the heaviest climate impact on vulnerable households.

For this reason, the Commentary includes specific policy proposals, both for limiting emissions responsible for climate change and for adapting the country to climate change.

According to Mr. Zachariades, decisions on climate policy should take into account the serious benefits that will arise for the Cypriot economy and society, due to the dependence on fossil fuels, but also due to the protection that these policies can provide to the most vulnerable citizens of the country to face the most serious effects of the climate crisis.

Climate change and in particular its implications for Cyprus and the wider region will be discussed at the upcoming international conference on the Climate Crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, co-organised by the Cyprus Institute and the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts on 26-28 September in Larnaka.
