In Cyprus since 2004, 184 deaths have been recorded, which are due to drug overdose, according to data from the Monitoring Department of the Cyprus Addictions Authority (AAEK).
In his message, on the occasion of the International Overdose Awareness Day, the President of AAEK, Dr. According to the European Union Agency for Narcotic Drugs, it is estimated that at least 6,400 overdose deaths occurred in the EU in 2022, noting that most deaths are linked to multiple substance use.
According to data from the Authority's Monitoring Department, "since 2004, when the recording of the indicator began, 184 deaths due to drug overdose have been recorded."
Dr.. Minas says that "deaths from drug overdoses can be prevented", adding that AAEK seeks to create a society that better understands the importance of drug overdose and how it can be prevented.
At the same time, it says they aim to reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths and create a positive climate that promotes the reduction of drug-related harm.
To this end, Dr. Minas notes, AAEK promotes measures such as the inclusion of opioid users in substitution treatment, the expansion of harm reduction interventions throughout Cyprus and the provision of harm reduction material through automatic machines in all districts.
AAEK is working to ensure the availability of naloxone and provide training on its proper use to frontline professionals, opioid users and their families.
