TRAGIC QUANTITIES IN DAMS - PURCHASE OF WATER AND OPERATION OF DESALINATION PLANTS

 Filenews 22 July 2024

Dam occupancy across Cyprus fell to 36.8%, amid the prolonged heat wave conditions that plagued the island and the limited water flow recorded during the winter months.

According to data from the Water Department, on July 19, the total amount of water stored was 107 million cubic meters or 36.8% of the total capacity of the dams, compared to 176.6 million. cubic meters or 60.7% which was the corresponding last year.

The Nicosia dams had the lowest occupancy on July 19 with 29.8% compared to 76.3% of last year, while the dams of the South Pipeline (including Kouri, the largest dam in Cyprus) showed total occupancy at 33.8% compared to 56.5% in the corresponding period last year.

Total occupancy at the four dams of Chrysochou amounted to 41,1% on 19 July compared to 64,6% of the corresponding period of the previous year, while at the dams of Pafos the occupancy amounted to 43,5% compared to 69,8% of the corresponding period last year.

According to data from the Water Department, water inflow from October 1, 2023 (start of hydrological year) until July 19 was limited to 24.5 million. cubic meters, compared to 48.77 million, which was the water inflow in the period from October 1, 2022 to the end of September 2023.

It is recalled that due to the particularly low water flow in the dams and consequently the low occupancy of the dams, the government included in the supplementary budget of the state additional funds of €58.1 million for the purchase of water and the operation of desalination plants.
