The Police informs the citizens again that the fraud continues with suspiciously misleading electronic messages (e-mails) that are sent en masse and falsely present the Cyprus Police as the sender. The emails are sent from fake email addresses and include letters bearing the logos of the Cyprus Police and Interpol. In the e-mails and letters, persons are named, while the Chief of Police, Mr. Stelios Papatheodorou, is falsely presented as the sender. The e-mails and letters state that the recipients are involved and should be charged with various criminal offenses, such as Internet crimes, child pornography, and rape.
The Police informs the public that these messages are fake and under no circumstances would such messages be sent by the Cyprus Police to citizens or organizations. These messages constitute an attempt to deceive citizens. The public is asked to be especially careful and not respond in case of receiving such messages. It is recommended that in case of receiving such messages, citizens inform the Police and that they avoid any communication or transaction through these malicious messages and the suspicious addresses mentioned in them. For the purpose of confirming any pending matter with the Police, the public is urged to contact the known communication channels available to the Police, such as the local Police Stations.
