A green sea turtle has been released back into the Mediterranean after recovering from injuries, the Fisheries and Marine Research Department (FMRD) said on Friday.
The turtle, named Lucy, was found in Kourion, Limassol, by the Department of Environment of the British Bases. After two months of treatment at the FMRD’s Marine Turtle Research and Information Centre in Meneou, the animal was deemed fit to be returned to the wild.
The release was attended by local marine sports enthusiasts who were briefed on how to respond to injured turtles and the importance of the Natura 2000 network for sea turtle conservation.
The operation was part of the EU-funded Pandora’s Box project, which aims to improve the management of Cyprus’ Natura 2000 network.
The project involves 13 government departments, universities, NGOs, and private companies.
