This year, 2,998 children belonging to the Greek Cypriot community were born, of which 1,565 boys and 1,433 girls.

In total, 32,811 Greek Cypriot children were born in the period 2020-2024. As for foreigners, a total of 1,331 were born this year, while in the period 2020-2024 a total of 12,427 were born.

As for the children with Cypriot citizenship belonging to the Turkish Cypriot community, 133 were born this year, of which 63 boys and 70 girls. In the period 2020-2024, a total of 1,825 children of Turkish Cypriots with Cypriot citizenship were born.

The above data was submitted before the parliamentary committee on Demography by the Ministry of Interior.

The data were submitted in the context of a discussion on the low birth rate in Cyprus, while ways to reduce the phenomenon while increasing birthrates were also discussed.

Both Committee President Linos Papagiannis, MP Zacharias Koulias and MP Prodromos Alambritis stressed the need for the government to support Greek Cypriot families in order to reverse the phenomenon of low birth rates.

Papagiannis said that while in 1990 the birth rate was 2.4, today it has fallen to 1.4. He also said that the data show that 30% of births do not come from Greek Cypriot families.
