GOVERNMENT APPROVED THE ALLOCATION OF STATE LAND FOR ESTABLISHMENT AND OPERATION OF UNIVERSITIES

A decision on the basis of which state land can be granted for the purpose of establishing and operating academic institutions was taken at yesterday's meeting of the Council of Ministers.

Taking into account the perspective gained by the education sector in recent years, the Government has taken the decision to proceed with measures to support the higher education sector.

In this context, recognizing that education is a growing pillar for attracting business activity and investments and, by extension, contributes to the economy of the country, in consultation with the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, the Ministry of Interior proceeded to the amendment of the relevant Regulations, with the aim of utilizing state land for educational purposes.

The amendment of the Regulations was deemed necessary, given the increased interest from local and foreign academic institutions in developing new and expanding existing university infrastructures in Cyprus. The allocation of state land for the establishment, expansion and operation of Universities, multiplies the options and creates more opportunities for Cypriot and foreign students, upgrading the position of Cyprus on the map of education.

The amending Regulations will be submitted to the House of Representatives for discussion and voting.
