CYPRUS MISSES DEADLINE FOR EU CLIMATE AND ENERGY STRATEGY

 in-cyprus 2 July 2024

According to Euractiv, the majority of EU member states, including Cyprus, have missed the deadline to submit their long-term climate and energy plans to the European Commission by June 30.

Euractiv reports that only four EU countries (the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark) have submitted their plans on time. The European Commission intends to issue a stern warning to the remaining member states.

By June 30, EU countries were legally obligated to submit their national energy and climate plans for 2030 (NECP). These documents are crucial for assessing whether the EU is on track to meet its climate goals.

“Despite the deadline, we received only four plans,” a European Commission spokesperson said on Monday, July 1.

“The Commission strongly urges all other member states to submit their plans as soon as possible,” the spokesperson added.

“As a first step,” the Commission plans to address the issue “urgently” with ministers during informal meetings of environment and energy ministers scheduled for this month, the spokesperson added.

A comprehensive review of the climate plans is considered vital for the Commission to understand if the EU is on track to meet its climate goals and to provide businesses with greater investment clarity.
