The Permanent Assize Court of Limassol imposed a 9-year prison sentence on a 43-year-old man from Brazil, after admitting to the offences of importing and possessing, with the aim of supplying to other persons, a quantity of 8 kilos of drugs.

The defendant was an important link in the drug chain, having the role of trafficker of quantities of cannabis on the basis of a well-thought-out plan aimed at channelling drugs to users in Cyprus.

The 43-year-old defendant admitted that on October 4, 2023, he imported into Cyprus from Greece a quantity of 8kg of cannabis with a view to supplying to other persons. He also admitted to possessing and sending to various persons in Brazil, the Netherlands and Spain the sum of €46,000 which constituted proceeds from illegal activities and specifically from the import, possession and supply of drugs.

In its decision, the Limassol Permanent Assize Court took into account as mitigating factors the 43-year-old's admission to the Court and the Police, as well as his clean criminal record. The Assize Court imposed concurrent sentences of 9 years on the two serious charges, namely importation and possession with intent to supply drugs to other persons and a sentence of 3 years on the charge of money laundering. The 43-year-old's defence lawyer, Evangelia Lazaridou, acknowledged the seriousness of the offences her client is facing, saying that the 8kg package in question would be received on behalf of third parties, for a fee.

According to the facts of the case, on October 5, 2023, information was received that a parcel had been imported into a courier company bearing the name of the accused. The package was marked as containing clothing but in which there were narcotics.

Members of YKAN went to the company's warehouse and in a search of the package, they found in a carton, 7 packages containing a total of 8 kilos of cannabis. The package was then delivered outside the apartment building where the 43-year-old recipient lived. The latter, after receiving the drugs, was then handcuffed.

The examinations carried out revealed that the defendant rented an apartment from January 2023 from another person for the amount of €1,700 per month, which he paid him in cash. According to the facts, which were admitted by both sides, it was established with the same details of sender and recipient that 9 more packages arrived in Cyprus, 8 of which had been delivered, however, it was not established whether or not they contained narcotic substances.
