Cases of theft of property, committed yesterday in a coastal area of Famagusta district, are being investigated by the Police, with a suspect man aged 22.
The 22-year-old is allegedly linked to the theft of property of two citizens, while he was stopped by a third citizen while attempting to steal property from a bag on a beach in Protaras.
At around 8.30pm last night, a 46-year-old tourist spotted a suspicious man searching his bag on a beach in Protaras and intercepted him. The Police were informed about the incident and members of the local Paralimni Police Station rushed for examinations to the spot, where they located the 46-year-old and the 22-year-old suspect.
Examinations followed, during which members of the police found in the possession of the 22-year-old, a wallet and a sum of money of €234, as well as a chain of gold colour. After the 22-year-old did not give satisfactory explanations for their possession, the members of the Police proceeded to arrest him for the offense of illegal possession of property.
At the same time, police were also shown a bag, which was at the scene and which, according to witnesses, the suspect was in possession of when he was stopped by the 46-year-old tourist. Police officers searched and found that inside the bag were two mobile phones, a pair of sunglasses, and a watch, which along with the wallet found in the possession of the 22-year-old suspect, were then identified as property stolen from the same beach.
The identification of the stolen property followed two separate property theft complaints filed with police later last night. A 46-year-old man complained that his purse, his mobile phone, his sunglasses, his watch, and a sum of money of 200 euros had been stolen from the beach, while a second man, also 46 years old, reported that his mobile phone, a wallet, and a sum of money of €42 had been stolen.
Paralimni Police Station is investigating.
The Police, in addition to the policing measures taken during the summer period to prevent incidents of theft in coastal areas, but also in mountain resorts and picnic sites, recommends caution to the public, urging citizens to take measures to protect their property more effectively.
Indicatively, the following simple protection measures are mentioned:
We avoid carrying valuables that we will not need
We transfer only the necessary amount of money we need
We do not leave our belongings unattended
Let our property be constantly in our field of vision
We cooperate with other bathers or excursionists for mutual surveillance of our property
