CRIME ROUND UP

 Pafos Live 18 July 2024

By order of the Pafos District Court, the operation of a night recreation centre on Agiou Antoniou Street in Kato Paphos was temporarily suspended.

The pub located on the so-called bar street of Paphos did not operate last night following the court's decision. The Pafos Police Department had registered a case with the court after the owner who did not hold a license to operate the premises and therefore could not issue licenses to broadcast music and sell alcoholic beverages had been repeatedly denounced recently.

The information was confirmed by Paphos Police Director Nikos Tsapis who said that the owners had been given the necessary time to secure the necessary permits and they did not do so. No store should operate without the licenses and measures that must be taken in order to meet the conditions for issuing licenses, he concluded.

A headache for the police in Nicosia is the repeated bomb explosions of recent days on various targets that are seemingly unconnected.

In the last period there have been four bombings, two of them with a new construction style and all attributed to organized crime. As estimated by police officers involved in fighting crime, it seems that after the latest murders and the imprisonment of some people, the deck of cards of the night is being dealt again, but it is still unknown who is "in charge" and gives the orders.

What is certainly evident from the information held by the authorities is the strong involvement of people from neighbouring countries in crime, which is why people of interest to the intelligence services began to be monitored. On the other hand, the Central Prisons continue to be a place from which crimes are committed, despite the repeated attacks that the Police have managed in cooperation with the prison management. Things have gotten shaky for some, hence the reaction to plant a bomb in the vehicle of a Central Prison inspector, thus attempting to terrorize and send a message apparently about frequent cell checks.

The case of the attack on the prison officer continues to be investigated, while at the same time, a second bomb explosion against premises is being examined in a different style from those that the bombers were used to pyrotechnics. The bomber planted high-powered explosives but a small amount, while usually the opposite is done. A similar bomb had recently exploded in Larnaka, but the two cases do not appear to be related.

Recently, a third bomb exploded outside a residence, with ICF Nicosia investigators estimating that the perpetrators may have been the wrong target. A recent explosion has occurred against a person involved in online betting and it is being investigated whether it is related to his professional activities or due to other reasons.
