A contract for an anti-drove system that will protect five sensitive Republic installations is now well and firmly blocked as procedural disagreements have delayed the delivery of the system with a very real possibility that it will be cancelled all together, if the government and the company that was awarded the tender do not reach an acceptable compromise.
A Greek company took over implementation back in 2021 and according to Philenews sources, if it fails to deliver within an acceptable and ‘logical’ timeframe, as referred to, then Nicosia has already taken the political decision to scrap the deal.
Justice minister Marios Hartsiotis has set two preconditions for completion of the work by the Greek company, finalised during an early July meeting at the ministry, with participation by Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades, technocrats, as well as police and civil defence representatives.
The same sources say that the clear message by Hartsiotis, the political head of the police which was the contracting authority, is that the system should have been installed quite a long time ago and under the current circumstances, there is no more room for further delays.
