The government is preparing to impose green taxation as part of the tax reform. In particular, a carbon tax will be imposed on motor fuels and, according to officials, there will be a small impact on the cost of living of citizens and the cost of running businesses.
Moreover, in bills of the Municipalities Law and the Regulation of Roads and Buildings, there was provision for increases of up to 14% in water tariffs, which was however eliminated by the Interior Committee of the Parliament.
Increases are also expected to be imposed on garbage bills if the "pay as you throw" system is adopted. Characteristically, the mayor of Pafos said a few days ago that each house may have to pay up to €500 for rubbish. If all these taxes are imposed, households will be brought to their knees.
The Government should quickly prepare a package of compensatory measures, but one that has a direct positive impact on consumers' wallets.
