HUNGARY FINED €200m FOR NON-COMPLIANCE WITH ASYLUM LAW

 in-cyprus 13 June 2024

The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has sentenced Hungary to pay a lump sum fine of €200 million and an additional €1 million for each day it delays complying with EU asylum law.

The Court found that Budapest failed to execute one of its rulings from December 2020, which condemned Hungary for violating EU law, specifically regarding procedures related to the granting of international protection and the return of third-country nationals without valid residence permits.
