CRIME ROUND UP

 Pafos Live 2 June 2024

Police arrested a 16-year-old boy last night to facilitate investigations into cases of theft from cars committed recently in the Famagusta district. With the arrest of the 16-year-old, the number of arrests in the above cases now rises to four, since three more people are already in custody.

Three men, aged 25, 18 and 17, were arrested on the evening of May 30 following a tip that young people were moving suspiciously in the Ayia Napa area. Various burglary tools were found in their possession, while the continuation of police examinations secured testimony against them that they were involved in a number of cases of theft from cars, committed between May 25 and 30, 2024, in Ayia Napa.

At the same time, another case of a similar nature, committed in Larnaka, is being investigated against the 16-year-old and the 18-year-old.

The new case was reported to the Police, on the evening of May 30, 2024, by a resident of Larnaka, according to whom, in the afternoon of the same day, unknown persons stole from his car, a sum of money, amounting to €6,400. During the above time, the vehicle was parked in a parking lot of an apartment building in Larnaca.

The examinations of the ICF of Larnaca revealed testimony against the 18-year-old and the 16-year-old, against whom judicial arrest warrants were issued, under which they were arrested to facilitate interrogations.  The four arrested were brought today before the Famagusta District Court, which issued a four-day detention order against them.

The Ayia Napa Police Station and the Larnaca ICF continue the examinations.

In another development, the Famagusta District Court issued yesterday a three-day detention order against a 17-year-old, who had been arrested in the early morning of May 30, 2024, to facilitate investigations into an investigated case of theft from a car, committed on May 29, 2024, in Ayia Napa.

Filenews

The Larnaca District Court found a 39-year-old police officer guilty of causing a fatal accident two and a half years ago.

The fatal car accident occurred on January 16, 2022 and the victim was 70-year-old Alain Merhege from France, a permanent resident of Cyprus, who had walked his dog. At the time in question, the police officer was serving in the Anti-Narcotics Police Department. According to the facts of the case, on January 16, 2022, the accused participated in a YKAN operation and was driving a service car on the Agia Anna-Psevda road. At some point on the road he dragged the 70-year-old who was trying to cross on foot. Shortly before, the victim's daughter and wife had crossed the road, testifying that the driver of the car that dragged the 70-year-old was traveling at high speed.

The elderly man was taken seriously injured to hospital and lost the battle for life a few days later. After a court hearing, the 39-year-old police officer was found guilty of causing death by reckless, dangerous or reckless act, which carries up to four years in prison. Great weight in the decision was played by the statements of the victim's wife and daughter, which were judged to be credible by the Larnaca District Court.

Meanwhile, questions are raised by the fact that police officers who testified at the trial had asked for the police officer to be prosecuted only for... negligent driving; Their recommendation was rejected, while the defendant's testimony was found by the court to be completely unreliable. The case was set for June 13 for the purpose of the defense lawyer of the police officer to mitigate the sentence that will be imposed on him. It is noted that the representative of the Prosecution in the case was Thanasis Papanikolaou.
