CORONAVIRUS RETURNED WITH SUMMER EXCURSIONS - INCREASE IN CASES AND HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS

Filenews 14 June 2024 - by Marilena Panayi

The summer excursions brought with them, as expected, an increase in the number of coronavirus cases and in the number of people who develop severe symptoms and are admitted to hospitals for hospitalization.

According to philenews information, the increased cases began to be recorded from the last week of last month and since then they have been steadily rising, although the relevant record kept by the Ministry of Health does not reflect the real picture in society as many citizens are now undergoing a self-test and their positive result is not declared to the competent authorities. Even if one of them turn to their personal doctors and receive instructions.

(Personal doctors usually declare coronavirus cases in cases where their patients belong to the categories of people entitled to receive specialized treatment).

As a result, the actual number of new cases is probably more than double the number officially recorded.

According to the official records, during the week of May 27 – June 2, 194 new cases had been reported, which had resulted from 3,122 tests. In the week following (last week), 248 cases were reported out of 3,057 tests.

Regarding the admissions of coronavirus patients to hospitals, information refers to 5-6 patients per twenty-four hours nationwide. However, in the previous two months and for long periods of time, there were no hospitalized patients. Last week, 9 new admissions were officially recorded. In the previous week, two admissions to Intensive Care Units were recorded.

Speaking to philenews, Assistant Professor in the field of Internal Medicine and Infection Control and member of the Central Committee for the Control of Hospital-Acquired Infections of the Ministry of Health, Constantinos Tsioutis, pointed out that "like the rest of the planet, we here in Cyprus are going through the fifth summer with the coronavirus circulating among us And we know very well now that the transmission of the virus is directly linked to our own mobility. It is no coincidence that every summer there is an increase in the number of incidents. We all have more contacts, we all go further away from home and get in touch with other people these days."

"The protection measures are well known, we have repeated them thousands of times. Each of us has our own personal responsibility to implement them in order to protect ourselves and those around us," he said, stressing that "we must remember that vulnerable groups of the population remain vulnerable and we must take care of people who belong to these categories. They are our elderly, the chronically ill, the immunocompromised, etc."
