ARSON SUSPECTED IN LIMASSOL FIRES

 in-cyprus 1 June 2024

A fire that erupted yesterday afternoon in the vicinity of Agios Silas in Limassol is believed to have been caused by deliberate action, according to statements by Nikos Logginos, Chief Firefighter of the Fire Service.

Another fire that broke out last night in Agios Therapon is also suspected to be arson.

Logginos confirmed that both incidents were cases of arson, stating, “The origin of the fire could not have been accidental, nor could it have been caused by a discarded cigarette. It is evident that someone intended for the fire to spread and cause destruction, and they succeeded.”

He further indicated that the fire in Agios Therapon, which occurred yesterday evening, was also a deliberate act of arson. “We are deeply concerned and are coordinating with the Police and relevant state authorities. Measures have already been decided upon to address the situation,” Logginos added.

Describing the challenges faced by firefighting forces, Logginos explained that the terrain was rugged, impeding the approach of firefighting vehicles. “At times, the wind reached speeds of six on the Beaufort scale,” he noted.

Aerial operations were employed, supported by chainsaw vehicles clearing paths for firefighting units.

“The situation was extremely challenging. Our primary objective was to safeguard residences and save lives, which we managed to accomplish.

Additionally, we successfully prevented the fire from spreading towards Palodia. Our efforts were arduous,” Logginos emphasized.

Significant forces remain deployed in the affected area to address any potential flare-ups. “We will maintain a presence in the area tomorrow and in the following days if necessary,” concluded Logginos.
