OP-ED - THE PEACE FORMULA OF PRESIDENT ZELENSKYY IS THE REAL CHANCE TO BRING AN END TO THE WAR

By Ruslan Nimchynskyi, Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Cyprus

Russia`s bloody war against Ukraine continues to cause large-scale human suffering and destruction. With a heavy toll on human lives and infrastructure, the growing regional and global risks and crises demand urgent action.

Today only the Ukrainian Peace Formula gives a real chance to stop the process of inflaming Russian aggression into a global conflict.

The Ukrainian Peace Formula is based exclusively on the principles of the UN and international law and represents a tangible pathway to end the war.

Our foremost objective is to construct a new framework ensuring security and justice for the international community at large.

The Peace Formula addresses pressing challenges that the world has faced being threaten by Russia’s genocidal war against Ukraine. These include threats to use nuclear weapons against a non-nuclear state, jeopardizing the safety of nuclear power plants and energy security, the use of famine as a weapon, inflicting enormous environmental damage, abuse and torture of captured military personnel and civilians, and mass forced deportations and other grave war crimes.

True peace transcends the mere absence of conflict; it necessitates confidence grounded in equitable justice.

Thus, the principles outlined in the Peace Formula must be enshrined within the body of international agreements, laying the groundwork for a revamped global security architecture. It is imperative to ensure widespread support for this initiative from nations across the globe.

The inaugural Global Peace Summit scheduled for June 15-16, 2024, in Switzerland, represents a pivotal juncture in advancing the cause of peace. This Summit serves as a forum to discuss diverse perspectives on the peace process and to inaugurate high-level discussions aimed at formulating a unified peace framework to restore peace in Ukraine.

While certain countries advocate for bilateral negotiations with the aggressor-state, our stance stems from practical experience of negotiations with Russia.

Despite nearly 200 rounds of talks spanning various formats from 2014 to 2022, including mediation and direct dialogue, no resolution was reached, and it never helped to avert Russia`s full-scale invasion.

It is evident that Russia’s participation lacks merit unless it demonstrates a genuine commitment to constructive dialogue.

The path to eliciting Russia’s good-faith engagement lies in forging a coalition of like-minded nations aligned in principles and strategies.

Hence, the inaugural Global Peace Summit refrains from extending an invitation to Russia at this juncture, instead prioritizing cohesion among peace-seeking nations.

The summit endeavours to consolidate these shared principles and approaches into a coherent plan, culminating in a joint document to be presented to the Russian authorities. The second Peace Summit can become the next diplomatic step to achieve a just peace and to end the war.

We implore all democratic nations to rally behind this noble endeavour and participate in the inaugural Global Peace Summit.

We sincerely trust that the Republic of Cyprus, like other stalwart champions of democracy, will continue to play a pivotal role in advancing the cause of peace.
