FROM A ZOO TO 'LIMASSOL FARM PARK' - PROPOSAL TO BE EXAMINED BY LIMASSOL MUNICIPALITY

Filenews 21 May 2024

The proposal of the Cyprus Centre for Environmental Research and Education of the Holy Metropolis of Limassol (CYCERE) regarding the future of Limassol Zoo is expected to be put to the vote before the Limassol Municipal Council in the near future.

The new proposal, which was presented a few days ago to the municipal body, is to transform the zoo into a new animal park called "Limassol Animal Farm Park". Taking into account the significant shortcomings and weaknesses in the operation of the existing zoo and the need for a more animal-friendly approach, CY.C.E.R.E. suggests as an alternative approach, its conversion into a small farm or park, where animal-friendly species will be hosted in a natural environment and livestock, domestic and Cypriot animal species.

The proposal stresses that the site will focus on breeding and keeping species without exposing animals to cages. In particular, familiar animals such as small goats, pigs, cows, horses, chickens, pigs, rabbits and other local animal species will be accommodated.  The proposal suggests that the new space also functions as an educational center, where the public can be informed and sensitized about the importance of animal protection and the environment, but also will be able to have some activities with animals.

Some activities that are proposed and which will bring humans close to animals are feeding them, painting competitions, tour routes, animal photography, volunteering activities, donkey walking, egg picking and cow milking.

The new green animal park "Limassol Animal Farm Park" could also include an exhibition of endemic and non-endemic species, offering information on their ecology, behaviour and the threats they face in their natural environment. In addition, the inclusion of the new animal park "Limassol Animal Farm Park" proposed in the wider botanical garden will enhance the educational function of the Primary Garden, attracting schools and educational institutions for educational visits, offering programs and activities that encourage interaction with nature and learning by doing.

In its proposal, CY.C.E.R.E. proposes, among other things, an outdoor photo exhibition of the Limassol Zoo with photographs and information from its foundation, evolution and remodelling, in its various periods in order to connect the visitor and get to know its history.
