At the final stage of its investigation is the case of granting a Cypriot passport through naturalization of Malaysian Joe Lowe, who was subsequently found to be wanted in his country for financial crimes.

The case is one of several investigated by the special team of investigators of the ICF Police Headquarters and which is still open, although investigations have been underway for some time. For this case, as well as others, a meeting was held yesterday morning at the Legal Service with the investigators, where the investigations were reviewed and the progress of those who are still "open" was examined.

As police spokesman Christos Andreou laconically stated to "F", this is one of the usual meetings held to examine the course of investigations and investigations.

The Legal Service, he said, is monitoring the course of developments and instructions have been given for the further actions that need to be taken.

As for Joe Lowe's case, an international arrest warrant is pending against him from his country and Interpol, as well as from the Cypriot authorities. He secured the Cypriot passport in 2015 with the purchase-investment of a villa worth five million euros in Protaras, in the "Ammos tou Kambouris" area.

When evidence came to light about who he was, then the Unit for Combating Cover-Up Offences proceeded to freeze the villa with a view to confiscating it in case he was judged to have secured Cypriot citizenship fraudulently.

Archbishop Chrysostomos was also involved in Joe Taek Lowe's naturalization application, having issued a cheque to the Holy Archdiocese amounting to €300,000. When the Malaysian scandal broke out, the Archbishop returned the cheque, while the matter was investigated by the ICF Headquarters and it was judged that there was no issue of corruption.

Although there was evidence that Joe Lowe was a fugitive, it was not until May 2023 that the Council of Ministers decided to remove the granting of Cypriot citizenship to the Malaysian.

Also, while the information that he was wanted internationally, it was found that there was no evidence to support the decision to deprive the Malaysian fugitive of his citizenship.

In March 2023, the Cypriot authorities, through the Ministry of Interior, which was immediately mobilized, contacted Interpol to gather the necessary data.  With the information received, the Ministry of Interior forwarded the matter to the Council of Ministers, which decided in May 2023 to deprive Joe Lowe of his citizenship.

Malaysian Joe Lowe is wanted for his involvement in embezzling more than $4.5 billion from Malaysia's sovereign wealth fund 1MDB in 2015.

Investigations in Cyprus are delayed because there have been many requests for legal assistance with the authorities in his country for information.

To the decision to remove his Cypriot citizenship, the fugitive reacted with an application to the Supreme Court with a multitude of lawyers.
