 Pafos Press 15 May 2024

On Saturday night, members of the OPE Paphos carried out a coordinated operation to crack down on electronic gambling, as part of which they seized seven computer towers that are allegedly being converted into gambling machines.

According to the Assistant Police Director of Paphos Operations, Michalis Nikolaou, on May 11, members of the Paphos Crime Prevention Ulam, in a targeted operation to crack down on electronic gambling, searched a property in Kato Paphos by virtue of a court warrant.

As part of the investigation, seven computer towers suspected of being converted into slot machines, as well as two modems, were located and seized.

An Arab person held in Central Prison was arrested yesterday late afternoon in connection with the attempted murder of 34-year-old Dimitris Andronikos.

Along with the other nine who were arrested, he will be brought before the Nicosia District Court, where the ICF Nicosia will apply for an 8-day detention order to be issued for all suspects.

The previous two proceedings were particularly lengthy, as they were accompanied by objections by the suspects' lawyers on various issues. Under these circumstances and based on the fact that the ICF Nicosia is certain to present new data for its investigative work, the process is expected with interest.

In the meantime, we recall that yesterday the appeals of three of the nine suspects detained in the previous days were rejected. The three-judge Court of Appeal, examining the grounds of appeal of the suspects' lawyers (1st, 2nd and 9th), rejected them. Two separate rulings were issued, one for the first two suspects and one for the 9th.

A case was registered today before the Larnaca District Court against three persons 32, 46 and 50, some of whom were previously known to the Police.

The three face felony conspiracy offenses, extortion and demanding money with threats.

The defendants were named as the persons who threatened and intimidated the couple in Larnaka district on different occasions between March and April. The suspects allegedly demanded €300,000 from the complainants after one of them had financial dealings with them.

The case was set before the Larnaca District Court on 4 December 2024. The police requested that the defendants remain in custody, but their request was rejected by the court, which released them conditionally. The 46-year-old and 32-year-old were released after posting bail of €20,000.

The two will report twice a week to a police station, hand over their travel documents and be placed on the stoplist.

The 50-year-old failed to meet the conditions imposed by the court and remains in custody.
