FILENEWS SURVEY ON MIGRATION - A PROBLEM FOR ALL. IT AFFECTS DEMOGRAPHICS, CRIME AND THE ECONOMY

 Filenews 29 April 2024

The vast majority of Cypriots consider crime, the demographic picture and the economy to have affected the problem of immigration.

The results of the Philenews survey, which was conducted in collaboration with Prime Market Research and Consulting Ltd, confirm that this problem is the one that concerns Cypriots to the greatest extent (93%). In fact, the extremely large number of participants (3,150 successful entries) within three days of the survey, allows safe conclusions to be drawn.

First of all, regarding the question "How important is the migration problem for you", the result of those who consider it very important reaches 93%. Specifically, 78% consider it very important and 15% very important. Percentages based on age categories increase as the age of respondents increases. At the age of 18-24 the percentages are 67% too much and 16% too much and increase as the age categories get older to reach the age of 55-64 to 86% too much and 11% too much, while at the age of 65+ 84% are placed at too much and 11% at most.

In terms of responses by province, there is a balance in the combination too much and too much. Of those placed in too much, most are in Famagusta district 86%, followed by Paphos 82%, Larnaca 81%, Nicosia 77% and Limassol 76%.

Demographics and crime

Of great interest is the position of respondents in the areas in which they believe that migration has affected. The majority believe that it has had the biggest impact on the demographic picture and crime as well as to a large extent the economy. Less do they think it has influenced our culture and even less so religion.

Specifically, regarding the demographic picture, 76% believe that it has influenced too much and 11% a lot. 6% consider it placed in the not so much and 3% a little. Here, too, the highest percentages are given by the 55-64 age group and reach 81% very much and 10% very much. As far as the districts are concerned, the largest percentage is recorded in Larnaka 82% very much and 8% very much.

The percentage that believes that immigration has affected crime is also extremely high. It reaches 82% (68% too much and 14% too much). The 55-64 age group also gives the highest percentage of 86% (73% too much and 13% too much) while Larnaka is the province that gives the largest percentage very much (75%).

A large proportion of respondents also place the economy among the sectors in which they have been most affected. Specifically, 73% (51% too much and 22% too much). The largest percentages are given by the age category 45-64 and by the districts again Larnaka.

In the culture sector the percentages are smaller. Specifically, 67% believe that migration has affected a lot (46% too much and 21% very much).

Even smaller is the percentage when it comes to religion. It drops to 54% (375 too much and 17% too much). Here appears the largest percentage which is placed on the fact that it has affected at all and reaches 20%.

65% were personally affected

Interesting are the positions on the question "How much has the Migration issue affected you personally". 65% said it had affected them. Specifically, 34% answered very much and 31% very much. The highest percentages cover the age categories from 35 to 64 years. As far as the districts are concerned, the highest percentage is recorded in Pafos 70% (43% very much and 27% very much).

Fear for the coming years

Extremely important is the belief expressed overwhelmingly (92%) regarding the assessment of whether the migration problem will grow over the years. Specifically, 71% believe very much that it will grow in the future and 21% that it will grow a lot. The highest percentages are recorded in the age category 45-64.
