CYPRUS & GREECE SIGN MEMORANDUM FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF "112"

Filenews 12 April 2024

Cyprus and Greece sign today a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation on issues related to the implementation of the Single European Emergency Number "112".

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Interior, the memorandum will be signed by the Minister of Interior Konstantinos Ioannou and the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection of Greece Vasilis Kikilias.

The signing of the MoU followed an intergovernmental meeting held last November in Athens, where it was decided to strengthen Cyprus-Greece cooperation on a wide range of issues, including in the field of civil protection.

According to the announcement, the Memorandum of Understanding "aims to define the framework of cooperation between the two states for the effective implementation of the communication services offered by "112".

The services include, among others, receiving and managing all calls to "112" and sending public warning messages in case of emergency.

"The signing of the Memorandum establishes the cooperation between the two countries in order for the Republic of Cyprus to implement a modern and reliable system of civil protection and timely information to citizens," it said.

Cyprus and Greece will develop cooperation for the exchange of best practices and know-how, while joint training seminars and programs will be organized to train their "112" executives, as well as to enlighten citizens on the use of "112".

Previously, the Minister of Interior will participate in a discussion on the support of EU Member States for climate change adaptation and civil protection, in the framework of the Delphi Economic Forum.
