The 31-year-old from Ukraine, who is accused of laundering almost €8 million, was also released on parole by the Larnaca Permanent Assize Court.

Two trials will be held in the high-profile case, one against the 31-year-old and the other against a 43-year-old compatriot who is alleged to be the recipient of the money. It is noted that yesterday the Court of Appeal had decided to release the 43-year-old conditionally.

As for the case against the Ukrainian woman, she was appointed today to answer the 40 charges she faces, related to money laundering and false statements.

Maria Neophytou's lawyers, Marinos Armeftis and Christos Charalambous, objected to her detention. Putting forward the decision of the Court of Appeal, Ms Neophytou said before the Permanent Assize Court that the witness material cannot establish what the offence giving rise to the offence is. In the end, the court decided that the 31-year-old should remain free after depositing €150,000.

Among the conditions set is the signing of a €50,000 bail by a creditworthy guarantor, with her obliged to appear three times a day at a police station. The case was set for May 13 to answer the charges the defendant faces. As for the case against the 43-year-old, in which the 31-year-old will be a prosecution witness, he was set for a hearing on June 6 after he was charged.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the 20 money laundering charges against him. It is recalled that the case came to light on March 1, after the 31-year-old reported to the police that she was robbed in Limassol by unknown people on a motorcycle who snatched €420,000 from her. From the investigations that followed, the 31-year-old was finally arrested after it was found that since August 2023 she arrived in our country 20 times, carrying a total of €7,832,300 for which she allegedly submitted false statements.

Subsequently, the 43-year-old was arrested, who received on March 1 a package that, according to witness material, contained money dropped by the occupants of the motorcycle.

The whole operation was based on an assessment of the modus operandi, the place and time of the suspicious persons, resulting in the detection of part of the stolen property and the arrest of seven persons. The burglary unit of the Famagusta ICF is investigating the involvement of those arrested in a total of nine cases of burglary and theft, committed between the months of January – April 2024 in Ayia Napa, from which electronic devices and already clothing and shoes with a total value of approximately 5000 euros were stolen.

Two of the seven suspects were identified by members of the Famagusta ICF, who as part of the coordinated operation, were under surveillance, in an area in Ayia Napa, around 4.00 am on Wednesday. The two suspects were wandering suspiciously in the courtyard of a residential complex, where they unsuccessfully attempted to break into residences. They were discreetly followed by the members of the Police, until they entered a residence, in which they live, as it was later found.

Upon entering the two suspects' residence, the members of the Police proceeded to a check, during which it was found that five other persons were and were staying at the residence. A search of the residence followed, where property and evidence, believed to be linked to a number of cases of burglary and theft, committed recently, were found in a residential complex in Ayia Napa, while another property was found, for which it is being investigated if it is the product of theft, after the seven suspects did not give satisfactory explanations for its possession.

The seven suspects, men aged between 23 and 31, were arrested for the offence of unlawful possession of property. Subsequently, after evidence emerged in relation to the commission of a total of nine cases of residential burglary, attempted residential burglary and theft, judicial warrants were issued for their arrest, under which they were arrested and detained for the purpose of police examinations.
