The Paphos Police proceeded to arrest a 32-year-old woman to facilitate investigations into an investigated case of forgery and impersonation as well as illegal employment and stay in the territory of the Republic.

According to Paphos Assistant Police Director of Operations Michalis Nikolaou, on April 15 around 20:30 members of the Paphos Aliens and Immigration Service went to a specific hotel in Kato Paphos to investigate information that undeclared foreigners were working there illegally.

After discreet surveillance of the place, Mr. Nikolaou said, they approached a woman working in the hotel's kitchen, who allegedly introduced herself as a 32-year-old Latvian by presenting a photocopy of a Latvian ID card with her photo.

Further tests carried out revealed that the document was forged. As it was established, she is 32 years old but comes from Georgia, and in the past, specifically on August 18, 2023, she was arrested for illegal stay in the Republic and was deported.

It seems, Mr. Nikolaou added, that while she was a prohibited immigrant she returned to the Republic of Cyprus through occupied countries. The 32-year-old was arrested for the crime of impersonation and then with a court warrant for the other crimes and was taken into custody.

Just 48 hours after the armed robbery of a kiosk in Chloraka, the same kiosk was the target of another robbery by the same perpetrator.

This unusual practice of the robber eventually cost him five years in prison, which was imposed today by the Pafos Assize Court on the 24-year-old of African origin who was found to be the perpetrator of two robberies of the same premises.

The double robbery took place on March 8 and 10, 2023 with exactly the same methodology, which prompted the police from the beginning to believe that the robber was the same person. In both cases, the unknown man wearing a hood and black clothes entered the kiosk and showing the cashier a pistol, which was placed at his waist and was eventually found to be a dummy, extorted from the cashier a sum of money of €300 and €400 respectively, leaving the scene on foot. As the employee of the 24-hour service kiosk said in a statement to the police, it was the same person.

The Police were led in the following days to arrest the 24-year-old based on evidence and visual material and he was detained, while upon completion of the investigations he was referred before the Assize Court.

The Court of Appeal, in a unanimous decision, recently decided to release on parole a 43-year-old from Ukraine, who faces a number of charges related to the well-known money laundering case.

Following his trial before the Larnaka Assize Court, a request for his detention was approved on the basis of the risk of absconding.

His defence lawyers challenged that decision by raising eight grounds of appeal, with the appellate judiciary recently deciding that he would be released on parole.

Based on these terms, the 43-year-old will deposit the amount of 30,000 in cash, hand over his travel documents to the police, have his name included in the list of people whose exit to the Republic is prohibited and report to a police station three times a week.

As it is known, the case arose after a 31-year-old woman from Ukraine complained that she had been robbed and specifically that a bag with €420,000 in cash was stolen from her in Limassol, a few hours after her arrival in Cyprus through Larnaka airport.

The 31-year-old was later arrested after it was found that over a long period she was coming to Cyprus and declaring exorbitant amounts of cash. In testimony he gave to police investigators, he implicated the 43-year-old in the case.

Lawyers Antonis Demetriou, Marinos Kaoullas and Andreas Demetriou (Demetriou & Demetriou LLC) appeared for the 43-year-old.
