At midnight on Sunday, March 10, the deadline for renewing driving licenses expires and from March 11, charges will be imposed, with sources from the Road Transport Department talking about the risk of the system "crashing" if everyone rushes to renew at the last minute.
196,000 more to pay
The Deputy Director of Road Transport, Mrs. Eleni Pipi, spoke on the show "Mesimeri ka Kati" on Wednesday, who noted that renewals up to midnight on March 10 will be done without any charge.
As for how many have renewed so far, Ms Pipi said that "today's figures show that 196,000 owners have not renewed their vehicle's registration". She warned that, in the event that everyone rushes to renew their licenses at the last minute, an overload can be observed and the system "crashes".
Late renewal charges
In case of overloading, Mrs. Pipi noted that citizens may not be able to renew their vehicle's license in time and be forced to pay the charges. As he clarified, from March 11, a charge is imposed on the registration license in the sum of 10 euros (what the license of the specific vehicle costs + 10 euros) and an amount equal to ten percent (10%) of the registration license which corresponds to the due amount for the current year.
For example, he added, if a vehicle's licence is €100 and its owner fails to renew it by midnight on Sunday, he will have to pay the amount of €120.
