The Police is taking particularly increased measures in view of the three-day weekend of March 25 (Saturday 23/03/2024 – Monday 25/03/2024), intensifying its action aimed at the safety of movements on the road network and the protection of citizens and their property.

According to an announcement issued by the Police, it will take additional measures to prevent road collisions, mitigate traffic and provide all possible assistance to road users, due to the increased traffic that is expected to be observed on the road network.

Therefore, it is noted that the Traffic Police Headquarters, as well as the District Traffic Police Departments, will be on foot.

"The measures of the Traffic Police include intensification of motorized patrols and increased presence of members of the Traffic Police on motorways, interurban roads and especially on the main roads leading to the coasts and mountains," it said.

It is noted that in order to ensure a bloodless three days, special emphasis will be placed on offences proven to contribute to fatal and serious road collisions, such as speeding, dangerous overtaking, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to wear a seat belt or protective helmet.

Moreover, it is emphasized that in this context, the Police appeals once again to drivers to be particularly careful and comply with traffic signs and the instructions of on-duty police officers.

Crime prevention measures

In its announcement, the Cyprus Police notes that the three-day period is considered to be high risk periods for burglaries and thefts, since criminals take advantage of the absence of tenants and that is why the Police take additional measures to prevent crime and especially offences against property, such as burglaries, thefts, robberies, etc., with foot and motorized patrols, in cities and the countryside.

It is added that in addition to the measures of the Police, the attention of the public is drawn to take precautionary measures to safeguard their property before leaving their home, as well as in their vacation area.

In particular, the Police urge, among other things, homeowners when they are absent from home, not to leave signs that betray their absence, to cooperate with neighbours of their trust for the mutual surveillance of their homes, not to leave the keys on the locks, nor even on the inner side of the door and to make sure that they have secured doors, windows and skylights.

At the same time, the Police urge shop owners to leave the cash registers of their shops open and contentless, not to leave large amounts of money in unsafe places and to have arranged for the installation of alarm systems.

At the same time, the public is urged to exercise extreme caution when walking or in busy streets/public spaces. "Money and credit cards should be placed in the front pockets of clothes, the bag, in which valuables are located, it is better to be placed in such a way that there is constant eye contact with it. (e.g. across your chest)", it is noted.

Finally, it calls on the public to be alert and to cooperate closely with the Police and, if necessary, to immediately inform the Police or contact the Citizen's Communication Line at 1460.
