POLICE CAMPAIGN - WEEK OF 'ENLIGHTENMENT AND POLICING' 11-17 March

 Filenews 10 March 2024

The Police announced a week of enlightenment and policing, with the ultimate goal, as it points out in its announcement, to reduce serious and fatal injuries in road traffic collisions and to raise awareness among drivers and passengers of cars in the use of seat belts, both in the front and rear seats, as well as in the use of child and lifting seats.

The Pancyprian traffic controls will start tomorrow, Monday, March 11, 2024 and will last until Sunday, March 17, 2024. This campaign will be carried out in parallel and at a pan-European level, in the framework of the cooperation of the Cyprus Police with the European Traffic Police Network ROADPOL.

According to police, seat belts remain the most effective safety feature in motor vehicles. According to the analysis of available statistics for the three-year period 2020 – 2022, 56.9% of the dead drivers and passengers of vehicles did not wear a seat belt. Also, according to international statistics, 75% of people ejected from their vehicle at the time of a road collision lose their lives.

By using seat belts and child/lift seats, the risk of contact between the human body and the interior of the car and the risk of injuries are reduced.

At international level, the use of restraint systems (seat belts, child and lift seats) is recommended as the best way to protect against ejection from the vehicle.

"The Police remain committed to serving society in order to ensure the safety of the public travelling on the road network to prevent fatal and serious road collisions."
