The nightmares she experienced at the hands of her 60-year-old neighbour who sexually abused her, she found the courage to testify under oath the now 16-year-old victim, convincing the Limassol Assize Court of the guilt of the accused. The then 11-year-old went to her neighbour's house to look after her while her parents were away, and he sexually abused her by taking advantage of her innocence.
The hearing of the shocking case was held before the Permanent Assize Court of Limassol behind closed doors, with the accused denying the offences included in the indictment. Yesterday, the Assize Court found the 60-year-old Bulgarian guilty of sexually abusing the minor on two occasions.
According to "F", during the proceedings the victim was called to testify with her sworn testimony taking place via videoconference, thus preventing the minor from coming into contact with the accused. Following yesterday's conviction of the 60-year-old, the Court set a new hearing, with the defendant's lawyer, Andri Ioannou, being called to speak for mitigation of the sentence.
The defendant was found guilty of charges relating to sexual abuse offences under the age of 13. As Philenews had previously reported, the 16-year-old broke her silence and confided in officials of the Social Welfare Services, what she experienced at the tender age of 11. After specific actions on the part of SWS, the 16-year-old gave a videotaped statement, describing various incidents of sexual abuse perpetrated by her neighbour.
These are two incidents of abuse which, according to her complaint, took place in 2018 when she was staying with her family in a residence in Limassol. One took place at the 60-year-old's residence in his family's absence. The accused tried to sexually abuse the minor while in the second case he showed her his genitals. The minor in her complaint stated that she had not spoken to anyone, as she was afraid, while at the time she was unaware of what exactly was happening.

The curtain fell today on the case of the 82-year-old elderly man who shot with a hunting rifle the 67-year-old thief who was trying to steal the power lines of the house, on Sunday night (11/6/23) in Alassa.
The Limassol Permanent Assize Court sentenced the 82-year-old defendant to two and a half years in prison on charges of acts intending to cause grievous bodily harm. The Court also imposed a one-year sentence on the offence of carrying and using a firearm and having it confiscated. The penalties are met.
The Assize Court considered the question of suspension of the defendant's sentence, stating that it was not justified.
Upon hearing the sentence, the defendant's relatives, visibly moved, burst into tears.
The defendant in an earlier proceeding was found guilty by his own admission to the charges of acts intending to cause grievous bodily harm, carrying and using a class C firearm.
It should be noted that initially the defendant was facing the charge of attempted murder, which was however interrupted and acquitted after the agreement of the Attorney General.
In its decision, the Assize Court took into account as mitigating factors, his immediate admission and cooperation of the accused with the authorities, his practical remorse and the absence of a criminal record. His age as well as his personal circumstances were taken into account. In addition, all the health problems faced by the accused were taken into account.
The Assize Court notes in its judgment that despite the mitigating circumstances and the age of the accused, the Court must not send wrong messages to would-be offenders and would not serve the needs of the Law.
According to the facts of the case, an 82-year-old man realized on Sunday night (11/6) that there was a power outage in his home. He went outside to check the main supply panel and took the shotgun and a cartridge with him for protection. At some point, he noticed an unknown man inside his property wrapping electricity wire. The 82-year-old then approached him and shouted at him asking him what he was doing there, with the attacker turning around holding an object in his hands, trying to escape.
The 82-year-old, in fear and threat, placed the cartridge in the hunting car and fired a shot, intending to intimidate the unknown man, but the gunshot hit the 67-year-old thief in the back.
The 82-year-old then called the Laneia police station where he informed what happened as well as his relatives.
