The Paphos Police is investigating a case of extorting money through false representations with the victim, a 66-year-old resident in a nursing home. According to a complaint filed by the complainant, another resident in the same nursing home managed to extort €4650 from him through false representations, according to his allegations under investigation.

The sum of money was part of retroactive payments received by the complainant from his social pension. A part of the amount, a total of €4800 was paid to pay for the nursing home and the rest of the money was kept by the suspect, aged 64, as the complainant complains, and is not returning it to him.

The two men maintained friendly relations, with the result that the 66-year-old trusted the 64-year-old who, as he states in his written complaint, went with him to the branch of the bank he served and withdrew the entire amount.

Initially, the complainant complained that he was to receive a larger amount, but when the case came before the Police, it appears that the suspect was forced to proceed with the payment of part of the amount to pay the obligations to the institution where the complainant resides.

The payment for the stay at the nursing home is valid until 6 April and, as he states in his testimony, the 66 year old does not know what he will do after that since he will be forced to leave the place and now he does not have any money.

The case, in addition to the Police, is expected to concern the Provincial Welfare Office as well.

Filenews

The curtain came down on Thursday (28/3) on a shocking case of abuse of the 11-year-old, who fell victim to the sick appetites of her 60-year-old neighbour.

The Permanent Assize Court of Limassol imposed on the defendant an immediate prison sentence of seven years in the first charge and four years in the second category, with the sentences being met. The 60-year-old was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault under the age of 13.

The nightmares she experienced at the hands of her 60-year-old neighbour who sexually abused her, she found the courage to testify under oath to the now 16-year-old victim, convincing the Limassol Assize Court of the defendant's guilt. The then 11-year-old went to her neighbour's house to be looked after her while her parents were away, and he sexually abused her by taking advantage of her innocence.

The hearing of the shocking case was held before the Limassol Permanent Assize Court behind closed doors, with the defendant denying guilt. The Assize Court, in previous proceedings, found the 60-year-old Bulgarian guilty on two counts relating to sexual abuse offences under the age of 13.

As Philenews had written in previous reports, the 16-year-old broke her silence and confided in officials of the Social Welfare Services, what she experienced at the tender age of 11. After specific actions on the part of SWS, the 16-year-old gave a videotaped statement, describing various incidents of sexual abuse perpetrated by her neighbour.

These are two incidents of abuse which, according to her complaint, took place in 2018 when she was staying with her family in a residence in Limassol.

One took place at the 60-year-old's residence when his family was absent. The accused tried to sexually abuse the minor while in the second case he showed her his genitals.

The minor in her complaint stated that she had not spoken to anyone, as she was afraid, while at the time she was unaware of what exactly was happening.

The Limassol District Court today imposed an immediate sentence of 2 years in prison on the 25-year-old defendant, who was found guilty after a court hearing, for the death of 19-year-old student, Marilena Pericleous.

The accident occurred on July 10, 2020, on the Limassol – Platres road with 19-year-old Marilena critically injured and succumbing to her injuries, nine days later. The victim was a passenger in the back seats of the car driven by the 20-year-old with another 19-year-old passenger, friends of Perikleous.

The 25-year-old defendant was found guilty after a court hearing of the offence of causing death by reckless, reckless or dangerous act or behaviour as well as unlawful overtaking.

The judge of the Limassol District Court, Doria Varosiotou, found the defendant guilty, noting that the Prosecution had succeeded in proving, beyond any reasonable doubt, the constituent elements of the charges faced by the defendant, and in particular the serious offence under Article 210 of the Penal Code.

In his written submission, the defence lawyer pointed out that the 25-year-old is a person with no criminal record. The Court of Justice has taken note of its new relevance, his family and his remorse. He also asked that the time taken before the case was heard be taken into account. He called on the court to assess his personal circumstances, saying the 25-year-old had been in a relationship for a few months and had been monitored by a psychiatrist since the tragic incident.

In her ruling, Judge Doria Varosiotou said the accused's apology and statement on behalf of his lawyer could not matter as he denied guilt from the beginning. She noted that she took into account her young age as he was only 21 years old. The judge handed down a two-year prison sentence to the 25-year-old defendant for the offence of causing death and no sentence for the second charge. He also imposed driving deprivation for a period of three months as well as 10 penalty points.

The illegal overtaking led to the death of the unfortunate Marilena.

According to the facts, the road accident occurred at 23.50 in the evening of July 10, 2020, on the Limassol-Platres road, when the car driven by the then 20-year-old with the two 19-year-old women as passengers, collided sideways with a car driven by the defendant, who at that time was attempting to overtake at a prohibited point. As a result, a collision was caused with the opposite vehicle, in which the three young persons were passing. The unfortunate Marilena Pericleous, who was sitting in the back seats, was taken to Nicosia Hospital where she underwent surgery. Eventually, she succumbed to her injuries nine days later.

With her death, the unfortunate Marilena gave life to three patients as her family, performing an act of altruism and humanity, after being informed by the attending doctors that the child could not be saved, made the brave decision to donate her organs.

The 44-year-old defendant of the quadruple fatal incident that occurred 30 minutes after the New Year at a photo-controlled intersection on the Limassol-Platres road responded during today's proceedings.

Victims of the unspeakable tragedy that marked the Pancyprian Church, the eldest daughter of the family, Evanthia, 27 years old, and the young son, Nicholas, 17 years old. They were joined by their grandparents, Nikolas Zavros and grandmother Vathoula, 72 and 74 years old respectively. The Assize Court room was once again attended by first-degree relatives of the four victims who attended the proceedings.

The son of the two elderly men appeared in court wearing a black T-shirt with photos of the victims. The defendant's lawyer, Lambros Pieris, said he is in discussions and consultations with the Legal Service in relation to the charges his client is facing, so that there can be an amendment regarding the charges of homicide. He also noted that all the witness material has been handed over to him. The 44-year-old defendant was charged with 10 counts to which he pleaded not guilty.

The four charges relate to the offence of murder, which carries a life sentence. The other 4 relate to the offence of causing death by reckless, reckless or dangerous act or conduct in violation of Article 210 of the Criminal Code, while the other two charges concern driving at a speed likely to endanger human life and non-compliance with a traffic light, which had a red indication.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       The Assize Court set a new hearing for 26 June 2024. The accused until then will remain in custody in the Central Prison as an undertrial. As revealed in a previous report by philenews, the accused was driving his vehicle at a speed estimated at 108 km per hour, which is double the limit on the specific road on which the multiple fatal collision occurred. The speed of the involved vehicle was scientifically calculated and a key factor was the recording of the vehicle by a security camera.                                                                                                                                                                                                                           From the time the vehicle is seen until the collision, the duration of time is measured and analyzed to extract the speed, while other factors are taken into account (lighting, brake signs if any, etc.).
