PRESIDENT EAC - DECISION ON FRIDAY REGARDING INEVITABLE 6% INCREASE IN PRICE

 Filenews 7 February 2024

On Friday, the final decision of the board of directors of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus will be taken for the 6% increase in electricity bills. This was made clear in a statement by EAC President George Petrou.

He explained that this increase is inevitable because it is required immediately to upgrade the Authority's network, otherwise in the summer of 2025 there will be a problem in electricity production and a shortage based on the given needs.

Petrou estimated the increase per kilowatt hour by about 1.8 to 2 cents, that is, from 27 cents per kilowatt hour to 29 cents.

At the same time, the EAC president clarified that the other increase of 13% (there was talk of 25%) cannot be implemented because there is a case in court and it is estimated that it can be clarified in two years.

Petrou also said that the possibility of continuing the electricity subsidy concerns exclusively the Government and the Ministry of Finance.

However, he did not fail to point out that under the circumstances under discussion, energy savings are essential, and this is a very serious signal to all consumers.
