Consumers will be faced with new serious increases in the price of electricity in the coming period, but also in the medium term.
This is because the court decision is pending in EAC's appeal for CERA's negative response to the request within 2023 for an increase in electricity prices for last year, while a new request for increases by EAC was also submitted for 2024. In addition, it is estimated that the price of kilowatt hour will increase for environmental reasons, as the cost of pollutants shows an upward trend, with a possible more than doubling by 2030!
During today's discussion in the parliamentary Committee on Finance of CERA's budget for 2024, the Chairman of the Regulatory Authority Andreas Poullikkas said that the Court's decision on EAC's appeal is pending.
As is known, EAC has appealed to the Court of Justice for CERA's negative response to the request for the imposition of increases in the final electricity price of up to 25% in 2023. At the same time, he said that EAC has submitted a new request for smaller increases in 2024, avoiding revealing the amount of increases requested by EAC for 2024. Phileleftheros' information indicates that if the request is met, which is the most likely scenario, it will result in an increase in the tariff of about 10%.
According to Poullikkas, in case the Court's verdict vindicates EAC, the Authority will be able to impose the increases of about 25% for 2023 and the increase for 2024, provided that the latter is approved by CERA.
Meanwhile, Poullikkas expressed the assessment that the price of kilowatt hour will continue to rise in the short and long term. Finally, in relation to the purchase of emission rights, the president of CERA said that by 2030 the price is estimated to reach €200 per tonne, while today it is €70 per tonne and for 2023 the cost on electricity bills was about €300 million!
