The 44-year-old woman from Portugal was extradited to Cyprus, believed to have played a key role in the international fraud involving 133 marriages of convenience, centred on Greece. She is the wife of the 44-year-old wanted man from Pakistan, who is alleged to be the mastermind of the ring.
The suspect allegedly recruited brides from Portugal and arranged for their transfer to Cyprus. Yesterday she was remanded in custody for five days by the Larnaca District Court on suspicion, among others, of conspiracy to commit a felony, participation in an illegal organization, participation and acceptance of the commission of crimes, money laundering, fraudulent marriage and forgery.
The 44-year-old, who is believed to have arranged a marriage of convenience with the 44-year-old, was arrested in Portugal on January 29 as part of a pan-European operation. Her involvement was revealed by brides from Portugal, who told the country's authorities that she was the person who recruited them either directly or through other women who had already performed marriages of convenience in Cyprus.
The suspect allegedly arranged their remuneration and in some cases accompanied them to Cyprus. Examinations by the Cyprus Police revealed that the suspect received sums of money exceeding €20,000 from both the main suspects and the foreign sons-in-law.
Under oral questioning, she allegedly admitted that she tracked down brides in Portugal to marry in Cyprus and claimed that her husband took advantage of her because of her poor financial situation.
