UNFICYP's MANDATE IS EXPECTED TO BE RENEWED AT THE END OF THE MONTH

 Pafos Live 2 January 2024

At the end of January, the UN Security Council is expected to vote on the resolution on the renewal of the mandate of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), which expires on January 31, 2024.

The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus and head of UNFICYP, Colin Stewart, will brief in New York, during the second week of January, representatives of the countries where troops and police forces contribute to UNFICYP and the Security Council, while, according to CNA's information, he will seek to meet the new envoy of the UN Secretary-General, as soon as her appointment is announced.

According to the procedure, the UN Secretary General's reports on UNFICYP and his Good Offices in Cyprus will be sent to the members of the Security Council, followed by a briefing of the Council by Mr. Stewart, around January 13. The reports will reportedly be distributed to members of the Security Council shortly before Stewart briefs the council.

Earlier in the week, before the Security Council briefing, Stewart is expected to brief representatives of the groups that contribute troops and police forces to UNFICYP.

After informing the Security Council, the draft resolution will be submitted and consultations between member states will take place to arrive at the text of the resolution which should be adopted by 30 January.

It is recalled that, as of 2023, the mandate of UNFICYP's mission is renewed on an annual basis and not twice a year as was the practice until this year.
