Filenews 16 January 2024
The ability of the photo-labelling system to report drivers for speeding from both directions has been implemented by the Traffic Police recently.
At the same time, driver offenders who were reported by cameras and did not pay their bill recently received the first summonses to appear in court.
"F" reports that lately drivers noticed that while vans with mobile cameras are stopped on one side of the road, the warning sign for the existence of camera control is placed on the opposite side, instead of on the same as it was done until now. This, as explained to us by the Traffic Police, is done because the speed control of drivers is done from both directions.
This can only be done, as we have also been told, on roads where there is no dividing railing, parapet or dividing island with flowers. That's why mobile cameras mostly monitor passing drivers in both directions in parallel, on roads within cities or on secondary roads.
At the same time, information tells us that dozens of drivers denounced by the cameras flood the managing company or the Traffic Police, filing an objection because they were sent out of court. According to a traffic police officer, there is no objection procedure, which is why drivers will either have to pay their bill or go to court. Only in glaring cases of error can they report it and it can be corrected.
During this time, drivers who did not pay their bill from the cameras began receiving summonses to appear in court. The outcome of the first cases will also show how the judges handle the offenders and what legal arguments the lawyers of the accused will put forward.
In the meantime, as of next Monday, January 22, 2024, the photo-labelling system will be extended to the district of Pafos. A total of 16 fixed cameras will operate at five locations, always aiming to reduce serious and fatal road collisions.
Specifically, according to the Police, four cameras have been installed at the intersection of Europa, Yiannou Kranidioti and Georgios Savva avenues and will check violations related to the violation of the red light, the white line and the speed limit.
According to the police, the same violations will be checked by four devices at the intersection of Ellados, Dimokratias and Tassos Papadopoulos avenues. Another four devices have been installed at the intersection of Agioi Anargyroi and Spyrou Avenues Kyprianou with Agapinoros Street.
In addition, two devices were placed at the junction of Athinon and Christodoulou Sozou avenues, while two devices were also installed at the junction of Chlorakas and Griva Digeni avenues with Agiou Georgiou street.
The aim is to reduce serious and fatal road collisions, as well as to consolidate proper road consciousness in our country.
Now cameras remain to be installed in 10 locations in Limassol (they are already operating at two photo-controlled junctions), while cameras will also be installed at the Acropolis lights in Nicosia (despite Marks and Spencer) and two cameras at a point on Archangelos Avenue that will only check the speed of drivers from both directions.
Finally, two cameras will be installed on the road Alamoinos – Mazotos, a road where several fatal accidents occurred.
