PARLIAMENT TO VOTE ON CRIMINALISING DEFACING ROAD SIGNS

 in-cyprus 24 January 2024

The Parliament is poised to pass a law tomorrow criminalising the description of road signs.

The legislation filed by DISY MP Nikos Georgiou is aimed at curbing vandalism on roads, particularly the use of spray paint on traffic signs.

Offenders will face up to six months in prison, a fine of €1,700, or potentially both. The courts will also have the authority to order vandals to pay for the damages they cause. The law comes in response to the escalating costs of sign repairs and replacements.

As reported by Philenews, the expenses for repairing or replacing signs on the Kofinou-Larnaca road alone are estimated to be around €320,000 after VAT in 2023.

The amendment to the Road Safety Law prohibits any form of alteration to traffic signs. This includes inscribing, carving, or drawing on the signs with any substance, and extends to any acts of moving, destroying, deforming, or altering the signs.
