CYPRUS INSTITUTE OF STATISTICIANS - ALARMING INCREASE IN TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN PAPHOS

 Filenews 21 January 2024

Road accidents in the Paphos district have increased by 50% in the last two years, compared to previous years. This is demonstrated by a survey by the Cyprus Institute of Statisticians (KIS), as announced by MP and President of the Institute, Chrysanthos Savvides.

The reasons why there are more accidents in Paphos, the study clarifies, are due to two factors. These relate to the narrowness of the roads and the traffic jam that is observed due to the increase in the number of vehicles.

The president of KIS described as encouraging the fact that in the Budget of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, funds are included for the introduction of intelligent transport systems.

Full coverage of the Cyprus network will be achieved in the next three years with the expansion of the above systems, Mr. Savvides stressed. In particular, additional electronic information signs, traffic surveillance cameras and meters are foreseen, the majority of which will be installed on the main road network of three cities, including Paphos.

With the introduction of these intelligent systems, concludes the study of the Cyprus Institute of Statisticians, there will be a reduction in the number of minor road accidents, while it also expresses concern about the redevelopment of huge sidewalks and narrow streets.
