The arrests took place on 19, 21, 23 January and were confiscated by British base police patrols "crickets", nets, bird imitation devices, shotguns and cartridges.

In one case, a Greek Cypriot was found in the area of Agios Nikolaos in possession of three nets 75 meters long, a huge size according to Assistant Police Director Panicos Panagis.

Speaking shortly after the latest arrest, the Assistant Commissioner of Police stressed that police activities to combat bird trapping will not stop.

"We are proud of the success we have had in reducing the volume of bird trapping taking place within BB and are determined to see this continue," he said.

"Our working relationship with Bird Life Cyprus and the Committee against Bird Slaughter (CABS) has also proven valuable in helping us effectively target bird trapping sites. The recent seizures have not been insignificant and finding someone in possession of 75 metres of nets is very serious. You can only imagine how many birds could have been trapped," he said.

"We will continue to commit more resources and use every piece of technology at our disposal as we move forward. This means using drones and cameras to ensure we are in a better position to detect and record those intending to trap migratory birds within BB," said the Assistant Commissioner of Police.

The Court of Appeal overturned the first instance decision of the Limassol Court concerning a 22-month sentence to a 35-year-old driver, regarding the death of 62-year-old Marta Tyorjanne from Hungary, in a road accident that occurred in the early morning of December 7, 2022, on the Germasogeia coastal road.

The Court of Appeal held that the sentence imposed on the defendant for the offence of causing death by reckless, reckless or dangerous act or conduct in violation of Article 210 of the Criminal Code was manifestly inadequate. Thus, he increased the prison sentence from 22 months to 3 years.

The Attorney General appealed against the judgment at first instance on the sole ground that the conviction was manifestly inadequate. The Court of Appeal upheld the ground of appeal, namely that the prison sentence of the 35-year-old was manifestly inadequate, taking into account that it does not satisfy the purposes of the Law, does not protect the public, is not dissuasive and does not reflect the seriousness of the offence of causing death by negligence. It was also pointed out that the sentence imposed sends the wrong signals to would-be offenders, especially for such offences that are on the rise as fatal accidents.

The case was handled on behalf of the Legal Service, both at first instance and before the Court of Appeal, by the public prosecutor Konstantina Hadjikonstantinou.

It is recalled that the Limassol Court had imposed on January 19, 2023, a sentence of 22 months imprisonment on the defendant in the offence of causing death by negligence
