Filenews
Information that emerged yesterday correlates a well-known person to the Cypriot authorities who maintains close ties with our island, with the Greek Mafia cleanups, but also with the murder of Alexis Mavromichalis.
The reason is a 28-year-old man from Georgia, holder of a Greek passport, who until the summer of 2020 was permanently settled in Cyprus was known to the Cyprus Police. According to information brought to light yesterday by the Greek police editor, Yiannis Souliotis ("Kathimerini" Greece), the 28-year-old wanted in Greece is believed to be a member of the criminal group, which is responsible for three murders of members of the Greek mafia, while "allegedly involved in a homicide committed on October 31, 2023 in Cyprus".
According to a competent source who spoke yesterday to "F", a procedure has already been initiated so that the Directorate of European Union and International Police Cooperation (DEE&DAS) of the Cyprus Police requests relevant official information from the corresponding directorate of the Hellenic Police (ELAS). The aim is to establish whether this information is based on evidence obtained during investigations by the Greek police authorities.
As is well known, since October 31, when Alexis Mavromichalis was murdered on the Acropolis of Nicosia, there has been no substantial progress regarding police investigations on Cypriot soil. There was no arrest, nor was it known whether investigators in the case had a specific direction.
However, this information about the 28-year-old's involvement causes a sensation among those who follow the police report closely. That's because the 28-year-old was reportedly a close associate with Alexis Mavromichalis in the past. In other words, there is nothing obvious to suggest that he turned against the murdered man at any point.
Before being deported from Cyprus in the summer of 2020, the 28-year-old had been involved with various cases involving the police. In one case, he even attacked three members of the police when he was summoned to testify at a police station for an under investigation matter. At the time, he had injured members of the police force.
According to "F", the ICF Nicosia in the summer of 2020 had secured a decree for the arrest and deportation of the 28-year-old, as well as a Syrian associate, on the basis of the law. The first had been identified and arrested during June 2020 in a nightclub in free Famagusta and was subsequently deported as a threat to public security in the Republic of Cyprus.
ELAS contacts with Cyprus
Apart from the journalistic information published in Greece, the other issue that causes sensation is that the expatriate from Georgia, who lived for years in Cyprus where he has relatives, is alleged to be a member of a criminal group consisting of persons with Greek passports and origin from countries of the former Soviet Union. This criminal group, according to a case file in Greece, is allegedly responsible for the homicides of three members of the so-called Greek Mafia.
According to the court file, of which "F" has knowledge, the 28-year-old along with the other persons are considered to be members of the same group and are responsible for felonies, including three murders. Two of the seven people, including the 28-year-old, have not been located so that arrest warrants can be executed.
The 28-year-old from Georgia, according to court documents formed by Greek authorities, is allegedly directly linked to two arsons last June, one at a gas station and one at an illegal tobacco factory in Aspropyrgos. In fact, his connection with these cases seems to have emerged both through scientific examinations, but also from telecommunications data obtained.
Information from "F" states that the Hellenic Police. had contacted the Cyprus Police last week to gather information about the 28-year-old. It is no coincidence that in the file of the Greek prosecuting authorities of tens of pages, reference is made in several cases to the suspect's relations with Cyprus. There are detailed reports about his relatives residing in a city in Cyprus, while the "Cypriot authorities" are cited, who allegedly informed their Greek counterparts that the 28-year-old has a criminal history for drug trafficking, extortion, influencing witnesses, burglaries, thefts, assaults causing bodily harm, possession of a weapon and threats.
A total of seven persons are considered by the Hellenic Police. as suspects of three homicides (one double) related to executions of people of the so-called Greek Mafia, a case of arson and explosion at the premises of companies of the same businessman, an arson in an industrial warehouse of another Greek businessman, a planned homicide and finally, a case of a planned felony in Montenegro.
The seven mentioned above have been described by the Greek press as a "group with international action".
The investigation into the murder of Alexis Mavromichalis
He fired once and disappeared.
According to what has come to light, there has been no substantial progress in the police investigation into the murder of Alexis Mavromichalis. The crime was committed on 31/10/2023 while the victim was on the terrace of an apartment on the 2nd floor of an apartment building on Verenikis Street in Acropolis. The shooter fired once from a hill in the area, from a distance of about 50 meters.
The executioner allegedly used a military-style rifle with a bullet longer than usual. According to what had come to light last November, the investigators of the ICF Nicosia estimated that the perpetrator is probably a person with military training, as after the crime he disappeared without trace.
However, there does not appear to have been any direction in the police investigation. Even a scenario was put before the police that foreign financial interests were behind the murder of Alexis Mavromichalis. The relevant information included references to persons and a case of illegal economic activity, which appears to have given rise to disputes that resulted in settling accounts. Although, as we had established last November, the above were known to competent members of the police force, however, they were not investigated due to lack of evidence and testimonies. After all, in a police investigation, if there is no testimony or anything tangible to support the information, nothing is taken for granted.
Now, whether the media reports from Athens will give a new twist to the case and the related police investigations is unknown. Everything will depend on the form of these elements.
