VOLUME MEASUREMENT AT 10,000 FLIGHTS INSTEAD OF 50,000 AS IT IS NOW

With 38 votes in favour, the Plenum approved a proposal for a law submitted by the MP of the Green Movement – Citizens' Cooperation Charalambos Theopemptou which amends the Environmental Noise Assessment and Management Law so that the annual movements of aircraft, i.e. take-offs and landings of aircraft for which the measurement of sound intensity is required, in the context of noise mapping, reduce them from 50,000 to 10,000.

The proposed regulation is deemed necessary so that the two airports operating in the Republic of Cyprus are checked for noise caused by their movements and submit relevant reports in the context of the noise mapping process by the competent authority.

In addition, the results of this mapping will make it possible to assess any impact of noise on the quality of life and health of residents living near the two airports.

It should be noted that all representatives of the competent services invited during the discussion in the Committee on the Environment agreed with its aims and objectives, in order to mitigate as much as possible the possible exposure of the population to continuous and/or extraordinary noise.

Explaining his proposal before the plenary, Theopemptou said that until now, in order to make mandatory measurements, the flights at the two airports should have been 50,000 per year. Now this number is reduced to 10,000 and therefore the competent department is obliged to take measurements and take measures to protect citizens.
