ONE IN 14 DRIVERS DROVE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL DURING THE LAST WEEK

 Pafos Press 20 December 2023

One hundred dangerous drivers, the Police put off the road, during the week-long pan-European campaign, to identify drivers who were under the influence of alcohol.

The traffic campaign was carried out between 11 and 17 December 2023 and is part of the pan-European campaign, carried out simultaneously across Europe by the European Traffic Police Network ROADPOL.

As can be seen from the results of the campaign in Cyprus, approximately one in 14 drivers who underwent a breathalyzer test was found to have a percentage of alcohol in their body higher than the permitted limit. In particular, of the 1,386 drivers stopped and checked during the campaign by members of the Cyprus Police, 100 were found to be driving under the influence of alcohol. As a result, these drivers were immediately removed from the road network and reported.

It is worth noting that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is the main cause of serious and fatal road collisions. According to official statistics, for the last five years, one in five fatal road collisions is caused by drinking alcohol or using drugs before driving.

The Police, with the aim and objective of preventing road collisions, but also of strengthening the correct road culture in our country, continues daily traffic checks on the entire road network of Cyprus. During these checks, particular emphasis is placed on those offences, which have been proven to be the main causes of serious and fatal road collisions, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, excessive speed, careless and reckless driving.
