The Pafos Assize Court today sentenced a 30-year-old man to 12 years in prison after finding him guilty on charges of conspiracy to commit a felony, illegal possession and import of drugs, with intent to supply as well as money laundering.

According to an announcement by the Office of the Communication Branch of the Police Headquarters, the 30-year-old was arrested on October 3, 2023 when, in the context of actions carried out by the Anti-Narcotics Service, in cooperation with the customs authorities, to identify persons importing drugs into the Republic of Cyprus through airports, he was stopped for inspection at Pafos airport, after arriving from abroad.

In a search carried out, four nylon packages containing a quantity of cannabis, with a total gross weight of fifteen kilograms and approximately 410 grams, were found in his luggage.

A justice official was the target of a bomb attack last night. The improvised device containing a charge of high explosive power was placed at the entrance of the kitchen of the officer's residence in the Anavargos district and exploded around 10 pm.

The public prosecutor serving at the Pafos Law Office was in the kitchen at the time and was slightly injured by the glass shards that broke. He was taken to Paphos Hospital as a precaution after suffering shock from minor injuries.

The scene was cordoned off by police who are conducting examinations and collecting evidence with the aim of identifying the perpetrators. Police do not rule out the possibility that the motives for planting the bomb may be related to cases handled or handled by the public prosecutor on behalf of the legal service. Persons who had previously been employed by the Police regarding serious cases are expected to be summoned for questioning at the Pafos ICF.

It is noted that another colleague in Paphos was the target of a bomb attack in December 2016.

A case of attempted murder, with a 36-year-old Syrian victim, is being investigated by the Police in Paphos. In connection with the case, a 21-year-old compatriot was arrested on Wednesday and detained to facilitate interrogations.

According to a police statement, the investigation of the case began on the evening of December 19, 2023, when information was received by the Police that a 36-year-old man was taken to Paphos General Hospital with sharp object injuries. The 36-year-old suffered lacerations to his left axillary region and left arm.

Police examinations revealed testimony against a 21-year-old resident of Paphos, who was arrested yesterday afternoon under a court arrest warrant.

As for the 36-year-old, after undergoing surgery, he was detained for treatment at Paphos General Hospital, with his health condition described by the attending doctors as out of danger.

Police arrested a 47-year-old man at dawn today to facilitate investigations into an ongoing case of possession of a large quantity of duty-free alcoholic beverages.

Specifically, at dawn today, members of the Nicosia OPE, in cooperation with officers of the Department of Customs, stopped for inspection at the Ayios Dometios roadblock, a commercial car, driven by a 47-year-old resident of Nicosia. During a search of the vehicle, 29 boxes containing a total of 174 bottles of alcoholic beverages were found in specially designed caches in the luggage compartment.

All the above were confiscated and received by customs officers, while the 47-year-old was arrested for a flagrant offense.

Police made a second arrest yesterday in relation to incidents that unfolded after the end of the football match APOLLONAS – NEA SALAMINA, which took place on Sunday, December 17, in Limassol.

He is a 21-year-old resident of Limassol against whom testimony was obtained during police examinations. The 21-year-old was arrested last night on a court warrant and taken into custody to facilitate interrogations.

It is recalled that on December 19, for the same case, the police had arrested a 17-year-old to facilitate interrogations.

A photo of the 21-year-old was released by the Police on 18/12/2023, in an attempt to locate him. After the 21-year-old's arrest, continuing to publish his photo is unnecessary.
