The Limassol Permanent Assize Court imposed today an immediate 9-year prison sentence on the 53-year-old defendant in connection with the case of 13 kilos of cannabis found in a travel suitcase inside the vehicle he was driving, on September 10, 2023.

The defendant was found guilty by his own admission to charges of possession and possession with intent to supply to other persons. The Permanent Assize Court of Limassol today imposed a 9-year prison sentence on the charge of possession for the purpose of supply.

It should be noted that the accused was under trial in the Central Prison from the day of the abuse and referral of the case to the Assize Court. Mitigating circumstances were taken into account his direct admission before the Court on the basis of his age, as well as his role as an occasional carrier.

It is recalled that in mid-September the Limassol YKAN received information about the trafficking of a large quantity of drugs. Shortly after 11.00 before noon on Sunday (10/9), the members of the YKAN stopped the 53-year-old defendant for inspection, who was traveling by car in the area of Polemidia. A search followed, during which a travel suitcase containing four packages of cannabis with a total gross weight of approximately 13 kg was found in the luggage compartment of the vehicle.

Two other people had been arrested in the case but their prosecution was suspended.

The Police proceeded with the arrest of a 28-year-old woman to facilitate investigations regarding an investigated case of illegal employment at a hotel in Paphos.

As the Assistant Police Director of Paphos Operations, Michalis Nikolaou, told KYPE, on December 5, members of the Paphos Aliens and Immigration Service conducted a check on a hotel in Kato Paphos following information that illegal persons were being employed there. As part of the check, they found a 28-year-old woman who, as it turned out, was working illegally.

According to police tests, she allegedly resides in the Republic without the permission of the Immigration Officer. Subsequently, the 28 year old woman was arrested and taken into custody, while the person in charge of the property, a 54 year old man, was interrogated and is expected to be prosecuted, added Mr Nikolaou.  As for the arrested woman, she was charged in writing and released to be summoned later.

A 38-year-old man was arrested yesterday afternoon on the basis of a court warrant pending against him to facilitate investigations into ongoing cases of burglary and car theft

Specifically, on November 27, 2023, a resident of Larnaca reported to the Police that unknown persons broke into a house in Larnaca of which he is the manager and stole a sum of money, air conditioners, as well as a car parked outside the said house.

According to the Police, in the early morning hours of November 28, the stolen vehicle was seen by members of the Larnaca OPE being driven by an unknown person on a Larnaka road.

The driver of the vehicle was signalled to stop but he continued his course and then allegedly abandoned the car, with the keys in the ignition.

The car in question was picked up by members of the Police for further examinations.

In the context of the investigation of the case, a testimony emerged against the above person, while the ICF of Larnaca continues the examinations.
