A sum of money amounting to €2,735 and 10 pieces of paper impregnated with a synthetic drug were found in the possession of the 59-year-old chief prison warden who was arrested yesterday morning by the Anti-Narcotics Service (YKAN).

The person in question had been stopped for inspection by the YKAN early in the morning on Diagorou Street (road leading to the Parliament) in the centre of Nicosia and was allegedly driving to the penitentiary to get to work. The members of this police service were acting within the framework of information.

A search of the 59-year-old's vehicle found five pieces of white paper, believed to be impregnated with a drug, and two bottles containing alcohol. In addition, he was in possession of a sum of  €1,235 in cash. A search of his home followed, where he allegedly handed over to police members a postal envelope containing five more pieces of white paper (A4 glue), of the same type as those found in his vehicle and which also appeared to be impregnated with narcotic substance. Another €1,500 in cash was also found.

The chief jailer was arrested, while tomorrow he will be taken to the Nicosia District Court where the members of the YKAN (Nicosia unit) will apply for a detention order against the suspect to facilitate the investigations in relation to the case. It is considered certain that the management of the Department of Prisons has already taken steps to suspend the arrested person, since criminal investigation against the latter is pending.

This is the second identical case that law enforcement has had to deal with in recent months against a prison guard. Last November (13/11) a 45-year-old officer of the Department of Prisons was arrested after checking his vehicle. Pieces of paper (in an envelope) had been found in his possession, which, as had been determined by analyses at the state laboratory, were impregnated with synthetic cannabinoids.

At the moment, therefore, the YKAN is investigating the origin of the drugs, in an effort to determine whether the two cases are connected and whether there is a ring.

Regarding last November's case, it should be noted that the prison guard had been interrogated, charged and released. Police interviews at the time said the jailer said he did not know the pieces of paper were soaked in a synthetic drug.

The information then stated that the drugs had been given to the prison guard by a relative of a prisoner in the Central Prison, so that the prison guard could supply them to the convict.

Two relatives of the person serving a sentence in prison, a 31-year-old woman and a 56-year-old man, were arrested in mid-November.
