A significant increase in the number of coronavirus patients admitted for hospitalization in state hospitals has been recorded in the last twenty-four hours. In fact, compared to previous weeks, the number of hospitalized patients has doubled, while after some time admissions to Intensive Care Units are also recorded.

At the same time, other seasonal infections are holding up well, with paediatric wards showing increased occupancy due to RSV, which continues to strike children indiscriminately. In adult wards, the first cases of influenza have also begun to be recorded, although greater flu activity is expected in January and February, while the number of patients hospitalized after showing symptoms of seasonal respiratory infections is increased.

Specifically, as SHSO spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou told "F", "at the moment about 60 patients with coronavirus are hospitalized and we must say that in the previous weeks the number of hospitalized patients with coronavirus was between 25-30". At the same time, "we now have ICU admissions and specifically we have a total of six patients, three in Nicosia and three in Limassol."

As Mr. Charilaou said, "these are the numbers that we record in state hospitals, but we must say that there are probably more patients who are hospitalized in other hospitals outside the Cyprus Health Organization."

Increased, he added, "remains the occupancy of paediatric wards where we have the cases of RSV that mainly affects very young children."

Mr. Charilaou called on citizens, "in the days that follow, when we will have more gatherings indoors, to be especially careful and protect especially the elderly."

Once again, he said, "we observe that almost all our patients are elderly and elderly and especially in Nicosia we see that most of them come from nursing homes."
