Managers of a residential complex in Tremithousa on the border with Emba, have been pumping sewage into an adjacent stream for months. A large number of asylum seekers live in the complex.
The sewage system of the complex has collapsed apparently due to the large number of asylum seekers who reside there, and administrators, the same ones who managed the complex at Chlorakas, instead of emptying the system with vehicles, emptied it with pipes into an adjacent stream. In fact two lakes with sewage were created.
In recent days, following complaints from residents in the area, about the strong stench, officials of competent Government departments went to the area and ascertained the validity of the complaints. In fact the officers themselves have recorded on their mobile phones the exit of sewage from the station of the complex and its channelling with pipes into the stream.
Instructions were given by the competent Government departments to immediately end the discharge of sewage into the stream, while the Community Council of Tremithousa has also taken some temporary measures by pouring soil into the sewage dumps.
The Pafos District Administration is expected to take legal action against the managers of the complex, while the District Governor is reportedly convening a wide meeting aimed at finding a permanent solution to the problem.
