Parliament will proceed tomorrow with the revision of the bill on the reduction of excise taxes on motor fuels and heating oil, in consultation with the Ministry of Finance.
The bill, which will be discussed tomorrow at an extraordinary session of the parliamentary Finance Committee, provides for a reduction in excise duty on gasoline and diesel by 8.33 cents a liter from November 1, 2023 until February 29, 2024.
Last week the plenary session of the Parliament did not meet due to the absence of many MPs abroad, although a bill had been approved by the Council of Ministers. Tomorrow the bill will be tabled as a matter of urgency and voted on the same day.
The technocrats of the Ministry of Finance are in consultation with the technocrats of the Parliament to change the date on which the measure of reduced consumption tax will be implemented. Two options are on the table, either immediate implementation of the law from tomorrow, i.e. immediately after its approval by Parliament and the publication of the law in the Official Gazette of the Republic, or its implementation from Friday, the 3rd of this month.
In both cases there will be a corresponding extension of the date of completion of the measure.
The fiscal cost of the reduction of excise duty on motor fuels will be €21.8 million. The bill, which was promoted today in Parliament, also provides for a reduction in the consumption tax on heating oil from December 1, 2023 until March 31, 2024. The budgetary cost will be €3.8 million.
