PAPHOS - LANDSLIDES, FALLING TREES AND HEAVY RAIN LAST NIGHT

Intense weather conditions prevailed on Saturday night in the Paphos district, with strong winds and heavy rainfall at intervals.

According to the Police, in two cases, around 22:00 to 23:00, trees were cut down, one of them in the city of Pafos and the other in the community of Timi. The Pafos fire department immediately rushed to remove them.

Also in another case, landslides occurred in the area of ​​Petra tou Romiou by the old road network.

In the meantime, the Paphos District Administration is taking preventive measures to deal with weather phenomena.

According to the Paphos District, Mary Lambrou, the District Administration has issued a circular to all Local Authorities with the aim of taking preventive measures for winter weather phenomena, while at the same time a regional meeting was held last month, with the participation of all involved bodies.

In its statements to KYPE, the Paphos District said that the District Administration has called through its circular that the competent authorities, where there are anti-flood works, drains and culverts be cleaned in order to have an unimpeded flow of water.

He added that it is the responsibility of the Local Authorities to carry out the cleaning, as long as they receive the consent of the Water Department.

In addition, he continued, where there are bridges over rivers, the District Administration is proceeding with the cleaning of the drains with its own crews, and especially in the areas that concern large roads. In particular, he added, "inside residential areas we must be particularly careful."

He then said that the District Administration coordinates its actions in parallel with the Fire Service, which has official control over matters of its competence.
