The nightmare experienced for weeks by the services and visitors of Pafos Airport, a large part of the Municipality of Geroskipou, the communities of the airport area and the tourist area of Kato Paphos, from the stench of the Pafos Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant, did not end immediately, as discussed a week ago by the members of the Committee on Energy, Commerce, Industry and Tourism of the Parliament and the officials of SAPA.
In the intervening days, the situation has improved, but the problem has not been completely eliminated, say local residents and airport workers. Especially during periods when winds blow from a westerly direction, the problem regains serious proportions at the airport, they point out.
The problem, which was due to the deposition of sludge from the processing of materials and which has already ended, is expected to disappear completely in a few days, assure the officials of the unit and SAPA.
This phenomenon, they explained, was due to a concentration of dried sludge which is normally transported by a private company to Vasilikos, where it is burned in a furnace, but lately the plant manager had stored it because there were problems with the transport contractor.
Due to the summer conditions that prevail during this period, according to the officials of the Pafos Sewerage Board, some stench still remains in the atmosphere, which is now a matter of days to disappear completely, since the source of its creation has now been removed.
They assured that every effort will be made not to repeat this phenomenon, which has nothing to do with the problematic operation of the Biological Station, which, as they stress, operates properly and produces tertiary treatment water in which weekly analyses are carried out and are within standards and specifications.
